A Digital Pornography Education Prototype Co-Designed With Young People: Formative Evaluation

A Digital Pornography Education Prototype Co-Designed With Young People: Formative Evaluation

Pornography is easily accessible to, and commonly viewed by young people. In a 2017 cross-sectional survey of 941 Australians aged 15‐29 years, 84% of males and 23% of females viewed pornography at least weekly [1]. Some young people report that pornography is an important component of their sexual development [2], helping to define understandings of sexual pleasure, how to have sex, and diverse sexual experiences and sexualities [3].

Exploring the Feasibility and Acceptability of Technological Interventions to Prevent Adolescents’ Exposure to Online Pornography: Qualitative Research

Consultations by the Australian e Safety Commissioner found that it was widely considered that pornography is harmful for younger children, but that the balance between harm and benefit is more nuanced for older teens and adults [3]. In recent years, the use of restrictive technology, such as internet filters, has become a common approach to preventing children’s early exposure to pornography [7]. However, these technologies are very unpopular with young people and their parents.

Studies have shown that young people are frequently exposed to sexual risk behaviors, gender stereotypes, and inequality when they view pornography [4]. Viewing pornography has been shown to be associated with early age of first sex, condomless sex, sexist attitudes, and aggression [3]. For example, a large (n=4564) survey of young people aged 14 to 17 years found that boys who regularly watch online pornography were significantly more likely to express negative gender attitudes [5].
