SUID includes death due to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed, and ill-defined deaths [1]. SUID is the leading cause of unintentional, injury-related infant death in the United States [2] and is often related to unsafe infant sleep environments, including, but not limited to, prone sleeping, bed sharing, use of soft bedding, or unsafe sleep surfaces [3,4].

That’s the one thing that was difficult for me was you’re three times higher risk with SIDS, what can I really do about that? That was difficult. Tilted cot, fine I can change that, but I can’t change a supportive partner thing.
Yeah, and I think at the end when you get your risk as well and it’s like you’re at this much of a higher risk, it opens your eyes and you’re like wow and you’re like okay, do you know like...yeah.

Sleep-related infant deaths, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), accidental suffocation or strangulation in bed, and other undetermined deaths, are the primary cause of death for infants from 28 days to 1 year of life despite risk reduction strategies promoted by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP; eg, supine position) [6].

Thus, this study aimed to (1) understand maternal knowledge of SIDS, (2) identify information sources for SIDS, (3) describe actual infant sleep practices, (4) explore opinions regarding infant sleeping devices and sleep monitoring devices as they relate to SIDS, and (5) discover evidence of provider communication regarding SIDS among mothers engaged in discussions about SIDS on a Facebook mother’s group.
