Sensory Overresponsivity and Symptoms Across the Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum: Web-Based Longitudinal Observational Study

Sensory phenomena are often described as a need to feel good internally or a need to calm a generalized internal tension [17], which are similar to the symptoms of hair-pulling disorder (HPD), characterized by a strong urge to pull the hair and the posterior reduction of anxiety or tension [18]. Similarly, sensory symptoms appear in mental disorders characterized by RRBs, such as ASD [19], OCD [20], HPD [21], and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [22].

In their study, Dowdy et al [27] found a significant positive association of the SEDS-S distress factor with symptoms of anxiety and depression and a significant negative association with life satisfaction and strength scores.
