Findings from a meta-analysis of 7 pre-post studies of facility-based perinatal mortality audits in low- and middle-income countries indicated a reduction in perinatal mortality of 30% (95% CI 21%-38%) after introduction of perinatal audits [10].

This study proposes a strategy to leverage maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality audits being implemented in Mali, as a basis for identifying gap areas that can be addressed by a case-based focused LDHF on-site training strategy within primary health care–level facilities (Centre de Santé Communautaire [CSCOM]). These trainings will also target community-based causes of mortality and morbidity in health facilities.

We estimated 200 births with a birth weight of less than 2.5 kg per cluster. A total of 4800 participants in the intervention and control groups are required to complete the study.
The 2 targeted talukas have a total of 54 union councils. Out of these, 24 were randomly selected by an independent researcher using a computer-generated program (Figure 2).
