However, in these studies questionnaires measured both seeing alcoholposts in a previous period and alcohol use in the previous period. Therefore, it is not clear whether alcoholposts predict drinking or are a consequence of (ie, simply reflect) it.
A handful of recent studies have used a longitudinal design to address the relationship between exposure to alcoholposts and alcohol use.

In this study, we examined 2 social aspects of alcohol-related content: the social evaluative context toward alcohol (ie, whether alcohol is portrayed in a negative, neutral, or positive context) and the presence of people in a post (eg, whether alcohol posts show a close-up of a cocktail, display 1 person drinking wine, or depict groups of people at a party drinking beers).
