A Mobile Phone–Based Sexual and Reproductive Health Intervention for Female Sex Workers in Kenya: Development and Qualitative Study

A Mobile Phone–Based Sexual and Reproductive Health Intervention for Female Sex Workers in Kenya: Development and Qualitative Study

Pregnancy prevention is a particular area of need for FSWs, with high rates of unintended pregnancy and low uptake of highly effective contraception and dual method use among those wanting to avoid pregnancy [13,14]. Research with FSWs in Mombasa, a port city and transport hub on Kenya’s East Coast with a large FSW population [15], documented that over 1 year, 24% had an unintended pregnancy and only 57% were using a modern contraceptive method [16].

The combination of these two factors allows for a highly salient interruption at a time most pertinent to the recipient [14,15]. In our previous work, young adults likened the experience of receiving EMI to having a sober friend or a sober version of themselves pull them out of a drunken haze and gently tweak their behavior to help them avoid going “too far” [16]. Riordan et al [8-10] have focused on EMI for university students, particularly during the orientation week period.

Mobile Phone-Based Ecological Momentary Intervention to Reduce Young Adults’ Alcohol Use in the Event: A Three-Armed Randomized Controlled Trial

Mobile Phone-Based Ecological Momentary Intervention to Reduce Young Adults’ Alcohol Use in the Event: A Three-Armed Randomized Controlled Trial

The messages comprised a range of columns in which each message was classified by “gender,” “time,” “location,” “drunkenness,” “motivation,” as well as some variables that were pertinent to a particular message type prescribed for a time point (ie, whether the participant had eaten, which was only relevant to tailoring in the first message at 6 pm). Different messages were written to ensure that there was a suitable option for different contexts that they might find themselves in.
