The transition from parent management to a parent-adolescent team management—with the adolescent taking on increased responsibilities of self-care and parents learning to relinquish control—can be stressful and is associated with a deterioration in diabetes self-management adherence behaviors [5].

This panel includes a pediatric endocrinologist, a pediatric diabetes nurse practitioner, a college student with T1 DM, and a parent of an adolescent with T1 DM (not part of the study).
Based upon best practices in app design principles [37], we will also conduct focus groups with participants recruited from our target population. We will invite 6 adolescents and their parents for concept-testing focus groups.

Type 1 diabetes (T1 D) afflicts more than half a million children aged 0-14 years worldwide [1]. Many individuals are diagnosed with T1 D at a young age, which requires parents to take responsibility for managing their child’s chronic health condition [2].
