The statistical analyses were performed in Microsoft Excel version 15.31 and SAS 9.1 Documentation. The relative frequencies of the replies of close-ended questions were calculated and stated as the percentage of the total numbers of replies.

Emergency departments are increasingly used for nonurgent visits in general and in pregnancy-related concerns in particular, both in the United States and Germany [34,35] (Schramm et al under review). This is unsatisfactory given that addressing nonurgent problems in outpatient settings is more cost-effective and that it leads to a higher quality of life for patients [35]. Our study highlighted that health care professionals in obstetrics in Germany are well aware of this problem.
