Consistent with past feedback, Ashley was designed to be “exotic” (ie, she was designed so that she appeared to be of no particular race or ethnicity), thus enabling families to assign their preferred race/ethnicity to her. In addition to Ashley, there were eight other characters—a family, consisting of a father, mother, son, and daughter, and four adult characters, consisting of a male and female physician, a teacher, and a coach (Figure 4).
